Discovery Green presents Blues and Burgers. Get out of the office and enjoy Houston in March and April! Blues and Burgers Wednesdays at the Lake House at Discovery Green. We’ve asked the best bluesmen in Houston to play for you.

    Schedule:
Blues and Burgers Wednesdays, March 17 through April 28, 12 – 1:30 pm Enjoy Houston’s best in blues music with a lunchtime concert. Co-sponsored by KTSU-FM.

March 17 Milton Hopkins Band As the Houston Press explains it, “Milton Hopkins has played with Little Richard and Sam Cooke, among many others, spent a decade shoring up B.B. King’s licks and just happens to share a bloodline with H-Town blues Buddha Lightnin’ Hopkins (they’re cousins).”

March 24Texas Johnny Brown Texas Johnny Brown (pictured above) is one of the legendary figures of the American blues scene. Johnny began his musical career in Houston in the mid- 1940s and toured with Bobby "Blue" Bland and Junior Parker in the 1950s and 1960s. Since returning to music full-time in 1991, Johnny has won numerous awards and played across America and internationally.

March 31Hustlers Brass Band  The Hustlers Brass Band is the ultimate New Orleans party band. Since 2005 they've been kickin' it hard with a flavor straight from the streets of New Orleans, paying their respects to the unique musical traditions of New Orleans. But the group's relative youth means their music yields an eclectic set of musical genres incorporating a special blend of R & B, Funk, Gospel Traditional Jazz, Zydeco, Latin and Be-Bop. They will take you on a historical journey through the Cresent City brass band tradition.

April 7Diunna Greenleaf & Blue Mercy Diunna Greenleaf, the Leader of Blue Mercy is a native Texan (Houston) who has a background steeped in gospel music. Influenced by the likes of Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Rosetta Thorpe, Sam Cooke, Charles Brown and her own parents Ben & Mary Ella Greenleaf (Gospel). She has developed "Diunna's style of Blues" in the same tradition as so many other great Texas blues men and women. She combines intricate patches of jazz, gospel and heartfelt soul to create a kind of blues that takes one on an emotional roller coaster ride.

April 14 - Steve Krase & the In-Crowd Steve was born in Brooklyn NY and has spent time in Ohio, California and Louisiana. Now almost 20 years in Houston, Steve has blended his high energy style with the soulful vibe that runs through the great city of Houston.

April 21 - Little Joe Washington Little Joe Washington learned from the giants of Houston’s Third Ward blues scene -- Albert Collins, Lightnin' Hopkins, Joe Hughes, T-Bone Walker and Johnny “Clyde” Copeland.

April 28 - Earl Gilliam Lauded as the "best Blues organist alive”, 79-year old Texas Bluesman Earl Gilliam has been smokin’ the house with his original Gulf Coast Blues sound for the past 60 years. A living legend of Houston's vital and historic Blues scene of the 40's and 50's, Earl has played both out front with his own band and as a sideman with some of the best.
