Kristine Mills is the winner of the 2009 Houston Press Music Awards “Best Female Vocalist!” This "bold, blonde entertainer outta the old school" and native Houstonian was also nominated for the prestigious 2009 Houston Press Music Awards “Musician of the Year” and two consecutive years in the “Best Jazz” category. Houston Modern Luxury Magazine named Kristine “Hottest Female Jazz Vocalist” on The 2007 Lust List. Kristine is the “Artist in Residence” at the Monarch Lounge of the Hotel ZaZa Houston. She brings her fresh take on jazz tunes, sassy bossa nova and her original music to one of Houston's hottest night spots. Opening night, January 14th, was an unprecedented, standing-room-only, crowd filled with friends, fans and local media. Kristine will perform in the Monarch Lounge every Thursday night.
In May 2009, Kristine released her third cd, bossanovafied, a collection of her original songs, arranged in the classic style of bossa nova and recorded in Rio de Janeiro. She celebrated the Houston release with two standing-room-only performances at the Mucky Duck, Houston's premier acoustic venue. bossanovafied is selling extremely well and is now gaining national attention. bossanovafied debuted at #46 on the World Music chart as reported by JazzWeek (Feb 22, 2010). Also, bossanovafied made the short list for the 52nd Grammy nomination consideration in the "Best Jazz Album with Vocals" category. Cuts from bossanovafied have been selected to play on the in-flight radio of several domestic and international carriers as of March 2010.
August 2009 Kristine was selected to headline the three-city tour of the 2009 Brazilian International Jazz Festival. Kristine and her Rio-based ensemble performed classic jazz and bossa nova tune and showcased songs from bossanovafied to sold-out theaters in Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. Two years ago Kristine appeared as guest vocalist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the 2007 Brazilian International Jazz Festival in Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro. Kristine returned from her tour in Brazil back to Houston just in time to open the Houston Brazilian Festival on September 5.
She has been impressing international audiences and music critics with her varied repertoire, vocal prowess and command of various languages since the launch of her professional jazz vocalist career in the early 90's in Houston. Since then, highlights of her career included performances at iconic jazz spots such as regular appearances at Snug Harbor in New Orleans, she also sang with select members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra for the 50th Jubilee Celebration of the Mies van der Rohe Society in Chicago, IL. Plus, her second cd, Kristine Mills - Playing with the Big Boys LIVE, was recorded during a live hometown performance at Cezanne with two veteran members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Kristine is a voting member of the Recording Academy (The Grammy's).
