The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents the exhibition Feathers, Fins, and Fur: Natural History Illustration of the 19th Century, on view January 30, 2010 through May 23, 2010 at the Caroline Wiess Law Building.
Artists and naturalists produced an unprecedented record of the natural world in the 19th century. Art, science, and technology converged in a multitude of printed images that fed a growing public interest in the amazing diversity of living creatures.
Opinions and practice varied as to whether animals should be displayed in splendid isolation or within their natural habitats, but a fascination with the detailed appearance of each creature remained constant. Keen observation and freshly killed specimens were required for an artist to capture those details, along with the animals´ distinctive coloration and movement. Photographic technology began to assist the process only in the latter part of the century. Both the artists and their audience felt the urgency of the work as the world it depicted became threatened by urban and industrial development and Western migration.
This exhibition displays the pioneering work of Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon, as well as lesser-known practitioners. Through books from the museum´s Hirsch and Bayou Bend libraries, today´s viewers can admire the persistence and skill of the artists, as well as the glorious creatures preserved on paper.
