Richard Stout: Time After Time
April 2-April 27, 2010

Canal Street Gallery will present an exhibition of painting and sculpture by Richard Stout, an accomplished artist and arts educator, considered a pioneer of early Modernism in the Southwest. His solo exhibit, Time After Time, is named after the earliest image in the show, a painting he created in 1963. The retrospective opens April 2 and remains on view through April 27. The public is invited to a reception with the artist from 6 to 9 Friday, April 9. In addition, the gallery will host a round table discussion with Stout from 3 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 10.
The painting “Time After Time” (main image pictured) depicts a series of concentric circles of light around a red sun, situated in what Stout says is a landscape typical of Texas. He adds, “A diagonal line of trees, runs across the painting like hands on a clock, and all is set in gray translucent night.”
Stout said that the piece was a good starting place for gathering paintings for the exhibit, which will feature works spanning over the past 50 years. “A lot of the work for this show is about how things come back to you,” Stout explains. “You could be twenty years into a career and begin doing things that you did when you first started.”
Stout was born in Beaumont in 1934 in the height of the Depression and began formal art lessons in classical drawing at age 12. He later trained at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, earned a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago on full scholarship, and an MFA from the University of Texas in Austin. His first solo show was held in 1958, and he has since exhibited in venues throughout Texas, across the nation, in Europe and in Asia.
In addition to his work as artist, Stout is a devoted teacher, serving as an associate professor of fine arts at the University of Houston for many years.
His work is featured in selected collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Menil Collection; the McNay Museum, San Antonio; the Huntington Gallery at UT Austin; and the Kupferstich-Kabinett Museum of Art in Dresden, Germany. Stout has also been featured in numerous publications and was named Texas Artist of the Year in 2004 by the Art League in Houston.
Throughout his impressive career the artist has explored many styles and subjects, from abstracts to still lifes to landscapes. Several of his paintings explore his surroundings – objects from a collection, his childhood home, people and places that have influenced him.
Stout works primarily in acrylics, unless he is painting a landscape and the climate requires oil paints. “Acrylic paint dries on the brush before it reaches canvas in West Texas, so I paint in oil when I’m there.”
“I went on a journey with my art,” Stout said. In his retrospective at Canal Street, his work will illuminate his dedication to introspection and exploration. He encourages others to do the same. “Come to the show, go to the lecture,” he said. “A lot of people are afraid to ask questions, but I love to answer them.”
