Disaster inspires an art show. Canal Street Gallery presents Lindsay Peyton & Mike Garman: Plywood,  April 24-30. While most Houstonians were in the midst of clean up efforts in the wake of Hurricane Ike, two Houston artists discovered an avenue for art.

“I remember walking around, seeing piles of discarded plywood lying on the curbs,” Lindsay Peyton said. “Earlier in the week people were having a hard time finding enough panels to cover their windows and doors.”

Her friend Mike Garman, who builds furniture with plywood, had made a similar observation.  The two starting discussing a concept they had both explored in art -- trying to find new uses for ordinary objects. They both agreed that something as simple as plywood could be used to make something beautiful.

A year and a half later, the artists will pay homage to the manufactured sheets of wood in a joint exhibition at the Canal Street Gallery simply entitled Plywood. Featuring Garman’s contemporary furniture designs and Peyton’s oil paintings, the exhibit will be held April 24 through 30 at 2219 Canal Street. The public is invited to an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday,  April 24.

Garman holds bachelor’s degrees in both architecture and fine arts from Rhode Island School of Design. He opened his own furniture company, One3Creative, in January of 2007. His technique of layering plywood allows him to expose the sectional interior of the piece. He won the Best Prototype Award for his piece “Bnch” at the 2009 Interior Design Show in Toronto.

Peyton completed a series of oil paintings on plywood panels for the exhibit. “I enjoy painting on wood,” she said. “I like letting the grain show through in places. It adds another dimension to a painting – more warmth, texture and life.”
