Rumblings of The Earth: Wifredo Lam, His Work and Words
The Afro-Cuban artist Wifredo Lam played a leading role in bringing the art of the non-white world to the attention of the international community. This film follows Lam from student days in Havana through his development as an artist in Europe where he became a close friend of Picasso and other luminaries. Upon returning to Cuba, Lam rediscovered his roots, became a leader in the Negritude movement, and produced his most famous work, “The Jungle.” This richly illustrated film uses Lam’s paintings and writing along with interviews with authorities on art and Caribbean culture to trace the evolution of a unique and truly multicultural twentieth century artist.

    Length: 23 minutes
    Released: 1996

Punta Soul: A film by Nyasha Laing
Punta Soul is the intergenerational story of an inspiring musical journey. Through its intimate portraits of Garifuna musicians such as Andy Palacio, Punta Soul chronicles the evolution of popular Garifuna music from Belize. The Garifuna, an afro-indigenous people exiled from the Caribbean to the coast of Central America in 1798, have carried on a rich and vibrant culture whose expression is found in the electric sound called ‘punta rock’ and the more soulful ‘paranda.’ Punta Soul explores the role of the music and the musicians in the cultural renaissance of ethnic communities in Belize. Punta Soul was released in November 2008 at the WOMEX World Music Expo in Seville, Spain.

    Length: 39:30
