Magnificent Seven: Houston Celebrates Surls is a partnership between the Rice Public Art Program and the Houston Arts Alliance, with support from a City of Houston Special Initiative Grant and private donations. The exhibition is on view March 1 through August 31.
James Surls (pictured) is one of the most preeminent artists that the state of Texas has produced. His wood-and-steel sculptures are in the collections of the major art museums in the state, and many in the nation, and he has placed many commissioned pieces in major private and corporate collections. Surls was given the Living Legend Award by the Dallas Visual Art Center in 1993. In 1991, he was named Texas Artist of the Year by the Art League of Houston. In 1999, Surls had solo exhibitions at the Marlborough Chelsea Gallery in New York City (catalog), the Glassel School of Art of the Houston Museum of Fine Art, the El Paso Museum of Art, the Gerald Peters Gallery in Dallas, and at the Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston.
The Rice Public Art Program builds on Rice University's commitment to incorporate art into its landscape and interior public spaces to create a more vibrant and dynamic campus that more intimately connects Rice with the arts community in Houston and beyond. The program creates opportunities for artists of diverse artistic and cultural perspectives to engage viewers through both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The Houston Arts Alliance is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization that seeks to advance the nonprofit arts industry in the Houston region, thus contributing to the enhancement of the region’s quality of life, economic competitiveness and attractiveness as a tourist destination. Its mission is to nurture, fund, advocate and promote participation in the arts in Houston and Harris County. For more information, visit the web site at www.haatx.com.
