The American Heart Association - Houston presents the 2010 Power of Legacy Soiree: Power to End Stroke,

Enjoy a VIP reception with purchase of VIP ticket at 6:30pm. Program and Concert begin at 8pm. A wonderful evening of entertainment by the dynamic violinist duo Nuttin' But Stringz celebrating our 2010 Power of Legacy Honorees: Aetna, Kirk Franklin and Judy & Wayne McConnell, the Power of Legacy Soiree promises to be exciting and entertaining while promoting heart disease and stroke awareness.

About Nuttin' But Stringz - Siblings Tourie and Damien Escobar are the creative geniuses behind the innovative group Nuttin’ But Stringz (NBS). At the respective ages of 8 and 7 the pair began to study the violin and became not only great musicians but learned to transcend their classical training to incorporate pop, rock and hip-hop, creating their own unique sound. Having studied at the acclaimed Juilliard School in New York City, the two were exposed to Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven and a host of classical composers. Due to their broad range of musical influence between school and home, their style is impossible to pigeon hole or label as suitable for only one genre.

This dynamic duo has grown immensely as artists from their earlier days as young teenagers, playing on the subways to help their single mother take care of them. What was to come for Nuttin’ But Stringz was a journey that would see them perform at The White House, win two Emmy Awards and a spot on numerous talk shows including The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show with Katie Couric and more. They have been featured in the Major Motion Picture ‘Step Up’ and played shows with legendary artists Al Jarreau, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight and The Isley Brothers.

In 2006 Nuttin’ But Stringz released their debut album, aptly named "Struggle from the Subway to the Charts" (released through KOCH Entertainment) marking a transitional period for them on their voyage to becoming men and respected musicians. These cool, edgy and unique brothers have stayed true to their own style of musicthat has taken them from playing their violins on the subways of New York to headlining shows across the United States and Worldwide yet it’s very clear that Nuttin’ But Stringz know that their journey has only just begun.

The American Stroke Association has launched Power To End Stroke, an innovative social marketing campaign focused on raising awareness about both risk factors for as well as signs and symptoms of a stroke. Power To End Stroke utilizes strategic partnerships and individual ambassadors to bring needed stroke education and awareness to the community.

This initiative positions the American Stroke Association as an organization committed to closing the health disparity gap. Power To End Stroke has begun to make a difference in our community. Your help is needed to spread this critical and lifesaving message to profoundly impact the incidence and treatment of stroke in Houston.

Stroke is the No. 3 cause of death and leading cause of disability in America. Each year over 795,000 Americans have a stroke...that means, on average a stroke occurs every 40 seconds.

High rates of diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension, contribute to stroke being the third leading cause of death and leading cause of disability in our country. African Americans are at greater risk for stroke than any other racial/ethnic population in the United States.

While anyone can have a stroke, knowing and managing risk factors reduces the likelihood of having one. Understanding the signs and symptoms of a stroke increase the likelihood of not just surviving, but thriving after a stroke.
