Check out the LSC-CyFair talent as the Lone Star College-CyFairSpring Student Art Exhibition opens April 27.  Don’t miss the Bosque Gallery’s Spring Student Art Exhibition set Tuesday, April 27 through Thursday, May 6.

This end-of-semester exhibition featuring the work LSC-CyFair visual art students have completed in their classes, not only showcases the students’ talents, but the breadth of LSC-CyFair’s art program as well.

One of the student artists is Jessica Rice, a single working mother of two children under the age 3 who is majoring in elementary education. She keeps a sketch book in the car or her bag in case she gets an idea for an art project, like while waiting in the pediatrician’s office. Art’s always been a passion, but usually sketching, she said, and mostly done in her free time.

“Last semester I decided to take painting as something for me … and I just fell in love with it,” she said. “Painting was a little foreign to me, which is why I took it. I wanted to do something I wasn’t that familiar with and see what I could learn.”

In elementary and junior high, art class was much more structured, because it’s learning the basics, Rice said. But at the college level, there’s more freedom to explore, opportunity to manipulate mediums and the chance to really get personal and make emotional connections.

Rice showed what she learned with her gallery submissions for the fall exhibition. In fact, she was proud when her self-portrait entry took first place. Having rediscovered her desire for an art education in the fall, Rice continued in Laura Fisher’s painting class this spring semester. Her work will again be featured in the gallery.

Meet Rice and other artists at the opening reception set from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29.

The Bosque Gallery is located in the Center for the Arts building on the Barker Cypress campus at 9191 Barker Cypress. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
