Spacetaker Artist SPEAKeasy: April 2010
April 21, 2010
Add Review/Comment
Every third Wednesday of the month at the Artist SPEAKeasy, Spacetaker hosts two to three artists from varying disciplines (visual, performing, literary, etc.) to present, in an informal atmosphere, creative dialogs/talks/presentations about their work followed by a question and answer session where the audience can glean further insight into the artist, the artist's aesthetic and creative process. The evening is designed not only to bring together artists and those who appreciate the arts, but also to introduce local artists to each other to encourage conversation and cross-disciplinary collaboration between artists and their chosen media.
Drinks and nosh are served at 6:30; formal talks are underway at 7:00. Guests are invited to come and go as necessary.
This Month:
This month's Spacetaker Arist SPEAKeasy features artists David Brown and David Eagleman.
About David Eagleman:
David Eagleman is a neuroscientist and writer. As an undergraduate he majored in British and American Literature, and then earned a PhD in Neuroscience. He currently runs a neuroscience research laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine, where he studies time perception, synesthesia, and how neuroscience will influence the legal system. Some of his written works include Sum, Synesthesia, and Behind the Mind. His debut work of fiction, Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives, became an international bestseller and is published in 22 languages.
About David Brown:
David Brown is a Houston-based Photographer. He studied at the University of Houston under Paul Kittleson and Luis Jimenez, and he received his BFA in 2001, graduating Magna Cum Laude. His works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions at DiverseWorks, Fotofest, space125gallery and Deborah Colton Gallery. Brown most recently presented the FotoFest show "Trying to Find My Way" at Darke Gallery.
Brown's word about his current work (from March 002Houston Magazine): We are confronted with so much information every day, how do we make decisions? How do we navigate? It turns out much of our decision-making is governed by thousands of years of evolution. It’s pretty much all biological. Even intuition is biological. (Dr. David Eagleman has written a special essay about Brown's show regarding perception. It is excerpted here in Absolutely in the Loop. )
