The First Saturday Arts Market recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. Continuing that tradition of making the arts accessible to all, up to 50 artists, artisans, jewelers, craftsmen and musicians will participate in May's market on Saturday, May 1, in The Heights.
Located on the Wind Water Gallery parking lot at 548 West 19th Street, the First Saturday Arts Market is open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Visitors can experience the true diversity of Houston's arts communities in a venue that is unparalleled in its variety of painters, jewelers, metal-smiths, woodworkers, printers, musicians and many other eclectic treats for the eyes and senses. And, as an additional treat, the Houston Heights Association's Heights 1st Saturday shuttle will be making stops at the market on Saturday between 12 and 4 p.m.
With Mothers day next week and Fathers day close behind this is a treasure trove of original art with everything from greeting cards to heavy metal, gouache landscape paintings to wild abstracts- glass, ceramic, dichroic, silver and gold jewelry, pottery, and purses to ponies. Seriously, artist John Manes paints horses and Indians in what may be a lost art form; Ledger Art. All the attending artists and market vendors are listed on the market website.
Not just art though, the market also has coffee from Wild Coffee Bean Co, you can get your healthy fix from Juice Girl or get some very artistic cupcakes from What's Up Cupcake! The market manager Mitch Cohen says, "I realize this is an art show but the cupcakes are artsy, we need our coffee and Juice Girl will let you pre-order Bloody Mary mix. That's what I'm talking about!" Cohen it should be noted is an artist himself.
Entertaining the crowds of art patrons and enthusiasts from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.will be the Eric Woodring Band. Woodring has been performing since 1996 and when asked what are the most gratifying parts of making music Woodring says, "I would have to say that live shows are the best. It’s instantaneous, real-time feedback on all your efforts. Outside of that, I would have to say the feeling you get after you finish writing a song. Writing is therapeutic and rewarding. Afterwards you have something to show for it –and that’s really cool."
But live entertainment is not the only attraction as the name First Saturday Arts Market implies. There will also be art in abundance, with a dazzling selection of professional and emerging artists on hand.
On Saturday, June 5, the market returns to its summer evening hours of 6-10 p.m.
