Sunday, May 9, 2010, FotoFest celebrates 20 years of its school-based education program, Literacy Through Photography, with 900 Houston-area students and 28 schools at FotoFence 2010.
FotoFence is the annual exhibition of student photography and writing by participants in FotoFest’s Literacy Through Photography (LTP) program. Over 900 students will install photography and writing collages, video, digital slide presentations, web-based blog postings and student-created books in the two-story gallery space at FotoFest. The opening reception, with student readings and free family photos, takes place Sunday, May 9th, 2010 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, at 1113 Vine St., Houston, TX 77002. The event is free and open to the public. Student readings will begin at 2:30 pm.
The LTP FotoFence 2010 exhibition is on display May 9 -19, Monday – Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday noon-5pm at FotoFest.
In the work at FotoFence 2010, students share experiences from their own lives and address issues such as global warming, immigration, divorce, friendship, the environment, and reflections on family and community in the U.S. today.
I remember reading inside the cool living room on a hot summer day.
With my mom cutting fresh lettuce for dinner tonight.
With my grandmother humming an old song like a radio.
- From the poem Green by Ashley Liu, 6th grade, Lanier Middle School (LTP/WITS)
FotoFence is the year-end celebration of student work from FotoFest’s LTP in-school education program, helping young people achieve better communication and writing skills using photography. Over 25,000 Houston-area students have worked with LTP since 1990 in HISD and surrounding school districts. LTP lessons are correlated to state and national curriculum mandates for students in third to twelfth grades.
