Artists kick off summer with evening shows.  First Saturday Arts Market in the Heights just marked its six year milestone, and begins its fourth year of opening at night only (from 6 pm to 10 pm) for the summer on Saturday, June 5.

Houston’s only monthly outdoor art and fine craft show is a staple of the Heights art scene: Nearly every art medium is represented, including artist-designed clothing; cards and stationary; oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings; international photography; and jewelry of unparalleled quality. Artists working in glass, ceramic, paper, metal and wood can be found at the market this summer, offering work in a variety of styles -- even the latest fad, steampunk.

Located on the Wind Water Gallery parking lot at 548 West 19th Street at Lawrence Street, the market is open year 'round on the first Saturday of each month, 6 to 10 p.m. from June through September, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. October through May. Admission and nearby parking are free.

Founder and market manager Mitch Cohen has a theory about why the summer evening shows are popular: "Being outdoors, in the middle of great art, softly lit canopies, and live music - it's romantic,” Cohen says.

“We see lots of groups and couples at the summer shows. I know it seems crazy, but it’s not really that hot after 7 p.m. We'll see the same number of people come in a two-hour time period in the evening that we might see all day during the regular shows.

"I think the success of the annual White Linen Night in the Heights event also added to our successful summer night shows," Cohen adds. White Linen Night in the Heights is scheduled for Saturday, August 7 this year. The neighborhood-wide free celebration draws an estimated 30,000 attendants each summer.

For White Linen Night only, the artists will move to larger digs at 414 West 19th Street, on the Sterling Bank property. Billed as “sultry, steamy, exotic and artfully provocative,” the neighborhood-wide event offers art, entertainment, shopping, dining, signature drinks from eclectic bars, and white linen fashions.
