July 10-August 21, 2010

Buchanan Gallery presents a Summer Group Show, on view July 10 through August 21. A very refreshing variety of sculpture and photography is in store for this next ArtWalk opening, which will take place on Sat., July 10.
Artist Kathy Boortz will return to the gallery with new media sculptures featuring whimsical birds and other humorous creatures, and Damon Thomas will present new works in ceramic. We will also be introducing a new gallery artist, Audrey Heller, whose background as a theatrical lighting designer has inspired her to create tongue-in-cheek photographs that delight in presenting viewers with overlooked details and visual puns.
Kathy Boortz writes:
When I hike, my eyes are often downcast, feasting on the gifts of nature offered up by the natural world. Weighed down like a peddler, I arrange and rearrange the treasures I gather till I reach my destination, my home and studio, where I review and reassemble my stash, my prizes of singular beauty. The shapes I select lend themselves to further interpretation, semblances of the animal world which I revere and speak for. Some literally make themselves while others need tweaking but all in all my aim is to lovingly portray the beauty, the humor, at times the harshness of the fauna of our natural world.
Audrey Heller writes:
I think of these photos as a melding of the influences of Dr. Seuss and Edward Weston.
When I was little(er) I fixed on the fantasy that we were living on a dust speck in a giant world. That idea is exciting and terrifying. Exciting because it means that there is so much more to learn than we can even conceive of, and terrifying because we could be squashed at any moment. I try to be like Horton, the elephant who found a world in a dust speck, and pay attention to the small worlds around me.
I get a thrill when people who have seen these photos bring me things: burnt out spark plug cables, computer motherboards, desiccated fruit peels, half eaten muffins, and say, "I saw this and I thought of you! Isn’t it great! Isn’t it beautiful?" That sort of response makes me really happy, thinking that perhaps my pictures encouraged someone to see things a little differently and a little more joyfully.
