Once On This Island, based on the book My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, is a musical, calypso-flavored re-telling of the traditional Little Mermaid story.

The tale is set on a Caribbean island in the Antilles, which is the home to two entirely different societies: the poor peasants and the aristocratic Grand Hommes. A group of storytellers tell the tale of the poor peasant girl Ti Moune, who longs for a grander life and falls in love with Daniel, an upper class boy whose life she saves after a car crash. Various gods control the peasants’ lives including the god of Love (Erzulie), Earth (Asaka), Water (Agwe), and Death (Papa Ge).

This highly original and theatrical tale garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. In almost non-stop song and dance, the show tells the story of. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

The show focuses on the effects social class prejudice and divisions have on love.

Mark your calendars today for all the KVPAC Summer Camp Performances.
