Who makes the best vodka in the Lone Star State? That question will be answered July 10 when the top Texas vodka companies compete in the Texas Vodka Throwdown, a public tasting and competition organized by Mike Cortez of BiteMeHouston.com.

Tito's Vodka, Savvy Vodka and Famous Vodka (all from Austin), DeLos Vodka (Lewisville), Zodiac Vodka (Richardson), Hudson Ferus (San Antonio) and Dripping Springs Vodka (Dripping Springs) are competing in the event. Two other companies -- Deep Eddy Vodka and Graham's Texas Tea (both Austin companies making infused vodkas) -- will attend the event but are not in the competition.

If you enjoy vodka, it's a good chance to learn more about Texas-made spirits; each company will speak about its vodka and answer questions.

The event, to be held at the Caroline Collective, 4820 Caroline St., will begin at 6. It is free and open to the public for ages 21 and over. Attendance is free but Cortez asks that nonperishable goods be brought to be donated to the Houston Food Bank.
