On your mark, get set, NobleMotion Dance! NobleMotion Dance, one of Houston’s newest and hottest dance companies, will present an evening of dance at the Barnevelder Theater Friday and Saturday, September 3-4 at 8:00 pm. NobleMotion, known for integrating theater and technology into dance performance, will be premiering several new works that range from cutting edge contemporary to hip-hop theater. A recent review from dance critic Nancy Wozny states, “NobleMotion is the new troupe to watch.”
This evening features an original light installation by artist Jeremy Choate. Photo Box D, both dark and mysterious, creates optical illusions where the dancers disappear and reappear. To create the work NobleMotion asked Choate to design the light score using unconventional sources. The dance was then molded to fit inside the installation and the overall effect is one of haunting beauty. Photo Box D recently premiered at the Big Range Austin Dance Festival.
Another choreographic offering is Barrier. Through a series of intimate duets and solos danced on a looming ten-foot wall, this personal yet universal work shows humanity’s capacity to overcome limitations. Presented last year at The Ailey Theater in New York City and also as a part of Dance Houston’s City-Wide Festival, the gritty, raw and sophisticated themes of conflict are sure to captivate the imagination.
I am flexes its hip-hop muscles and quickly goes from cool to controversial. Based loosely on choreographer Andy Noble’s hip-hop background, I am both honors and challenges the role of hip-hop in society. States Noble, “Hip-Hop used to fight the man, now it appears to be the man.”
The concert closes with the critically acclaimed KinkyKool Fan Blowing Hard, which was recently showcased at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. A work for nine dancers and three industrial fans, KinkyKool explodes into the space with fierce partnering and high-energy motion. Critic Neil Ellis Orts comments that the dancers move "in ways you'd swear would only be possible with Hollywood special effects.” The concert also features three additional works that range from quiet and introspective to irreverent and sassy.
