National Rep Theatre is proud to present the Houston premiere of Mary Zimmerman’s The Arabian Nights. This marks the third season of NRT and of its third premiere of an award winning major work. July 29, 30, 31 and August 6, 7, 13, 14 at 8pm. Performed at Freneticore/ Frenetic Theatre.

The Arabian Nights is an acclaimed adaptation of the ancient Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night from which many stories have developed into what we know as the Arabian Nights. Mary Zimmerman is one of our nation’s leading directors and creators of new and powerful work, specializing in the magic of storytelling. She is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a Tony Award for her direction of her own Metamorphoses.

Each night the great and powerful King Shahryar marries and kills a new bride to exact revenge on women who he feels cannot keep love in their hearts. This continues until one night, he is brought the clever and beautiful Scheherezade who delays her death by entrancing the King with story after story of lust, comedy, mystery, sensuality and sorrow. An ensemble of twelve actors play out the many tales with singing, dancing, and acrobatics. This play celebrates the transformational power of storytelling and how it can heal even the coldest of hearts.

The world premiere of Zimmerman’s adaptation of The Arabian Nights was presented by the Lookingglass Theatre Company of Chicago in 1992 and a New York City produc-tion at the Manhattan Theatre Company Club followed in 1994. The New York Times reported, “The Arabian Nights is a celebration of the salutary powers of storytelling...of the rich, inexhaustible multiplicity of a narrative tradition.” The New York Post de-scribed the play as “Funny, sexy, romantic, enchanted and enchanting.”

We recommend our production to mature audiences due to mature themes throughout the show.

Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the door, or online at the theatre's website: www.nationalreptheatre.com.
