Do you love show tunes? So do we. For one extraordinary evening, the talents of the Houston Chamber Choir will take off in a new direction under the expert guidance of Judy Blazer, (pictured) a Broadway Drama Desk nominee.
Judy Blazer brings her deep knowledge and passion for the New York stage to the Houston Chamber Choir’s special performance, The American Musical: Live from New York on Saturday, March 12 at 7:30PM on the Neuhaus Stage at the Alley Theatre, 615 Texas Avenue, 77002.
Blazer, a veteran of Broadway and a Drama Desk nominee, has dazzled critics and audiences alike in such stellar productions as Me and My Girl, Titanic, Candide and 45 Seconds from Broadway. She was recently recognized as a “comic whirlwind” by Scott Heller in The New York Times for her performance in Whida Perdu: Resurrection Tangle.
She often works with Michael Tilson Thomas on The Thomashefsky’s, a tribute to Yiddish theater revues. The revue will be featured on Great Performances on PBS this year.
Inspired by the theme Houston Chamber Choir’s 15th Anniversary Season, A Bridge Across Time, Blazer plans to trace the arc of Broadway from Vaudeville to contemporary music theater. The evening’s program will include excerpts from early Broadway musicals to more recent shows, including numbers by composers and lyricists such as Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Stephen Sondheim and others.
“We want to put these glorious voices in beautiful frames!” exclaimed Blazer. “Some vocalists will be featured in the earlier, more ornate numbers from Broadway while others will be gilding more contemporary pop style music theater selections, proving all the more how incredibly versatile these wonderful Chamber Choir singers are! This is what our company, The Artist’s Crossing explores in New York and all over the world. Joseph Bates, Chris Stephens and I are looking forward to creating this special program for Houston Chamber Choir.”
Robert Simpson, Founder and Artistic Director of the internationally renowned Houston Chamber Choir, was honored by Chorus America with the Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art at its national conference in June 2010. Throughout his illustrious career, Simpson has worked tirelessly to cultivate America’s passion for choral music.
The programming of the 15th Anniversary Season, A Bridge Across Time, captures the vocal clarity and grace of the Houston Chamber Choir and showcases its brilliance. As noted by Gramophone magazine, an internationally recognized authority on classical recordings, the Houston Chamber Choir’s recent release, Ravishingly Russian, is highlighted by “exquisite harmonic illustration and enriched by an outpouring of graceful melody and restrained sentiment.”
