The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents an HMNS Special Lecture entitled The Whydah, Her Pirates and Their Stories, Tuesday, October 5, 2010 - 06:30 PM.

In 1984, after several years of research and exploration, Barry Clifford discovered the first verified pirate shipwreck ever found in U.S. waters. Lost in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717, the Whydah (pictured), a one-time slave vessel, has yielded so far more than 100,000 artifacts—including the Whydah’s bell, cannon, gold and silver coins, African jewelry, weapons, and many other artifacts—helping to illuminate the world’s understanding of pirates.

Clifford offers a unique glimpse into the Age of Piracy, and explains what the ship and its artifacts reveal about the real lives of the men who sailed under the black flag.

Sponsored by KUHF, 88.7 FM and Rice University’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies. Lecture is in conjunction with the exhibition Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship, on view 10/8/10 through 2/6/11.
