How did the religiosity of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X shape the major themes that surface in their writing and speeches? These two pivotal figures in the Civil Rights Movement made unique contributions to the religious and theoretical underpinning of freedom struggles in the United States, and their work sparked important conversation concerning the methods, goals, and consequences of struggle toward civil rights and 'liberation.'

We will explore the ways these two leaders influenced the Civil Rights Movement as it challenged prevailing visions of democracy.

Anthony B. Pinn is the Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor of Humanities at Rice University, the first African American to hold an endowed chair at the University. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1994 as well as his MDiv and MA from Harvard. He is the author/editor of twenty-four books including Terror and Triumph: The Nature of Black Religion; The Encyclopedia of African American Religious Cultures; and The Black Church in the Post-Civil Rights Era.
