Welcome to the 30th anniversary season of the Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series, considered one of the nation’s leading literary programs. Over the years, the Series has presented more than 300 of the world's great writers, including winners of five Nobel Prizes, 49 Pulitzer Prizes, 45 National Book Awards, and seven Booker Prize winners, as well as 13 U. S. Poet Laureates.

The 2010/2011 lineup continues the trend of literary greatness, presenting nine of the best contemporary writers. The season runs from September to April and consists of seven evenings, each beginning with a reading by one or two of the featured writers, followed by an on-stage interview conducted by a local writer or scholar. The evenings conclude with a book sale and signing, where audience members can meet the authors. All readings take place in Downtown Houston’s Theater District and begin at 7:30 pm.

Monday, October 11, 2010, on the Hubbard Stage, Alley Theatre, the Inprint Brown Reading Series presents Carlos Fuentes.

CARLOS FUENTES—Mexico’s celebrated novelist, short-story writer, critic, and statesman—is one of the greatest literary figures of Latin America. The author of more than 25 books, his major works include The New York Times bestseller The Old Gringo, the first book by a Mexican author to become a bestseller in the U.S.; Terra Nostra; The Death of Artemio Cruz; A Change of Skin; and The Eagle’s Throne, which The New York Times described as “the most wickedly entertaining novel of Fuentes’ career.”

Booklist praises his most recent story collection, Happy Families, as “completely captivating and entertaining, with Fuentes’ superb style (exciting language that snaps with fervency) and his trademark characterizations dancing off the page.” Among his many awards and honors, he has received the Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the top literary prize in the Spanish speaking world, for lifetime achievement.

This reading is presented in association with the Consulate General of Mexico in Houston, as part of Mexico 2010, a year of events marking the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. During the book sale and signing, attendees are invited to a reception in the lobby, hosted by the Mexico Tourism Board.
