Aperio, Music of the Americas announces its Zilkha Hall Debut Saturday, January 22, with an expansive program of contemporary chamber works that celebrate the relationship between the environment and music. Deep Waters & New Horizons: Musical Evocations of Nature will take place at the Hobby Center's Zilkha Hall, 800 Bagby St. in the heart of downtown Houstons Theater District.
The connections between music, nature, and human spirituality have long fascinated composers--none more so than in the romantic and modern eras. In America, romantic composers were the first to exhibit in their music an appreciation for German romanticisms love of the natural world and in the 20th century this awareness expanded to include environmental concerns.
Recognizing the timely importance of these perspectives, Aperios ensemble of acclaimed performers will showcase this environmentally inspired music, mixing their thrilling performances with recitation, video, and lighting in a program that includes the profoundly ethereal sounds of George Crumb's Voice of the Whale and the soaring melodies of Andrew MacDonald's In the Eagles Eye.
The concert will also feature local premieres of works by Mark Dancigers and Thomas Osborne, in addition to music by Steve Reich, Peter Lieberson, and Frederic Rzewski.
Houston Symphony flutist Judy Dines and percussionist Craig Hauschildt will perform Mark Dancigers's Rain for marimba and flute. Mr. Hauschildt will also premiere a new arrangement of Steve Reich's Music for Pieces of Wood scored for solo percussionist, in addition to performing Frederic Rzewski's percussion recitation, To The Earth. Violinist Timothy Peters, cellist Patrick Moore, and pianist Michael Zuraw will feature In the Eagles Eye, the sweeping piano trio by Canadian composer Andrew MacDonald. Mr. Zuraw will also perform selections from Edward MacDowell's Woodland Sketches and Peter Lieberson's The Ocean That Has No West and No East. Pianist Jason Hardink will perform the Houston Premiere of composer Thomas Osborne's ravishing virtuoso piece And The Waves Sing Because They Are Moving. George Crumb's landmark work Voice of the Whale concludes the evening's program with Ms. Dines on flute and Kimi Kawashima on the piano.
