Children of Hangzhou: Connecting With China
September 25, 2010-January 3, 2011
West meets East in Children of Hangzhou: Connecting With China This interactive new exhibit at the Children's Museum of Houston will take you on a whirlwind adventure to the Far East through the lives of four children who live in Hangzhou, China. Children of Hangzhou distinctly displays the lifestyle of modern-age Chinese people. The exhibit bridges the gap of acknowledgement and understanding between our two genuine cultures. Come and explore the similarities and differences between Houston and Hangzhou!
From Sept. 25 to Jan. 3, you’re invited to enter an interactive display of the culture and lifestyle of Chinese people. Join us for this mesmerizing and educational trip to China guided by four young Chinese students. Each Chinese kid will provide a first hand look into the lives of Children in Hangzhou by “talking” directly and showing you their everyday lives through a video diary. Each child will touch on various aspects of life such as family values, food, performing arts, school, and most importantly traditions.
WEST MEETS EAST
The exhibit will begin at a bus stop where you will discover the wonderful city of Hangzhou and meet our four young “tour guides.” You will then be able to glimpse at their exciting lifestyles. One child, Weicheng, will take you through his family home as he prepares a birthday meal for his grandmother. Qianyun will show you her passion of Chinese opera, what instruments are used, and share a popular Chinese folk tale called White Snake Lady. You will also meet Gangzheng at his middle school, who will explain some historical and fascinating information on China. And finally, Doudou will show you what it is like to live on the countryside. She teaches people the process of rice planting, weaving and rice pounding.
You will also have the chance to create your very own Chinese poetry by discovering the traditional balance of the Ying and Yang through the Pavilion section of the exhibit. In addition to the Pavilion, the Hangzhou Children’s Library offers the chance to check out the latest software in China.
Hangzhou is one of the seven ancient capitals in the history of China and has become one of the most modern civilizations of time. The city is also known to mix ancient traditions with modern lifestyles.
With Children of Hangzhou you will leave with a better understanding of life on the other side of the world. You will discover that we share the same values no matter the distance or how different our lifestyles and cultures are. The exhibit provides you with an endless opportunity of fun and adventure. Don’t miss your chance to expand your knowledge of the Chinese culture and explore the wonders of different people and places from around the world. Come out and discover a different life away from your own home.
