The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Friday-Saturday Lecture: Painters as Sculptors: Picasso + Matisse,  at the Caroline Wiess Law Building. Presented by David E. Brauer, Senior Lecturer, Glassell School of Art, MFAH.

An interesting aspect of modernism from the late 19th century to the present lies in the fact that many of the most innovative sculptures were made by artists who were first and foremost painters. Degas, for example, used sculpture as another way to investigate movement in space, while Gauguin made sculptures as another means through which to explore the primitive. But by the 20th century, many painters pursued sculpture for less obvious reasons.

David E. Brauer examines the very different roles sculpture played in the work of the two most influential painters of the 20th century, Picasso and Matisse, both represented by sculpture in the MFAH collection.

Lectures are free with museum admission and open to the public. A reception to meet the speaker follows each program.
