Bayou Bend, the American decorative arts center of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents Grand Opening Event: Lora Jean Kilroy Visitor and Education Center, Saturday, Sep 25, 2010,  1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, at Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens.

This September Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens opens the Lora Jean Kilroy Visitor and Education Center, fulfilling the vision of Bayou Bend´s founder, legendary Houston philanthropist and collector Miss Ima Hogg. The project also features the renovation and reinstallation of several significant rooms within the house museum, displaying both new acquisitions and objects not exhibited before, including extensive and significant collections of silver and textiles.

On Saturday, September 25, the public is invited to celebrate the opening of the visitor center at a day filled with music, performances, activities, games, and refreshments. Admission is free from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. No advance reservations are required.

Featured performances include music from Lonestar Bluegrass Band, Paragon Brass Ensemble, Rachel Buchman, the Texas Army Fife & Drum Corps, and fiddler Mark Seale. Demonstrations from the Houston Area Blacksmith Association, Gulf Coast Area Woodturners, potter Marica Erickson, and historical clothing expert John Keahey provide insight into the art in Bayou Bend´s collection.

A variety of craft activities, colonial-era games, gardening tours and workshops, puppetry, and re-enactment performances add color and excitement to the day´s festivities.
