The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Friday-Saturday Lecture: Berlin 1900: Politics and the Triumvirate of Impressionism, at the Caroline Wiess Law Building.  Presented by Dr. Marion Deshmukh, Robert T. Hawkes Professor of History, Department of History and Art Hist ory, George Mason University, Virginia.

With Germany´s unification as a national state in 1871, her capital, Berlin, soon emerged as a vibrant cultural center, rivaling Munich. Critics dubbed a group of Berlin-based artists, who had traveled to France and Holland and who lived for a time in Munich, the "triumvirate of impressionism." By 1900, Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, and Max Slevogt—known for their loose, energetic brushwork, bright colors, and subject matter drawn from modern life—were catapulted into the forefront of German avant-garde art.

Dr. Marion Deshmukh contextualizes the work of these three painters within the history of Imperial Germany.
