Society for the Performing Arts (SPA), bringing the world’s best to Houston, presents MOMIX: Botanica, 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010, in Jones Hall as part of the SPA IW Marks Dance Series.

MOMIX returns to Houston with its newest evening-length production, the whimsical and mythical Botanica. Known internationally for presenting works of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, Moses Pendleton’s MOMIX defies categorization as easily as its dancers defy gravity! MOMIX delights audiences around the world and has been celebrated for its ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images using props, light, shadow, humor and the human body.

Botanica transports you to a fantasy world of surreal images and childlike wonder brought to life by a cast of dancer-illusionists. Set to an eclectic score that ranges from birdsong to Vivaldi, Botanica reveals nature’s changing imagery in MOMIX’s signature illusionary style. Flowers bloom, go to seed and die; vegetable, animal and mineral – all in human form – combine and metamorphose.

Using large-scale puppets, projected imagery, and larger-than-life props designed by Michael Curry (The Lion King), MOMIX evokes a vivid landscape populated by Pendleton’s fertile imagination.

    “Eye-popping and mind-boggling . . . everything looks magical.” — The New York Times

    Duration: 2 hours with intermission.
