Discovery Green presents Blues and Burgers. Enjoy Houston's best in blues music with a lunchtime concert, 12 noon to 1: 30 pm. Co-sponsored by KTSU-FM. Blues and Burgers Wednesdays at the Lake House at Discovery Green. We’ve asked the best bluesmen in Houston to play for you.
Schedule:
September 15 – Diunna Greenleaf & Blue Mercy Diunna Greenleaf, the Leader of Blue Mercy is a native Texan (Houston) who has a background steeped in gospel music. Influenced by the likes of Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Rosetta Thorpe, Sam Cooke, Charles Brown and her own parents Ben & Mary Ella Greenleaf (Gospel). She has developed "Diunna's style of Blues" in the same tradition as so many other great Texas blues men and women. She combines intricate patches of jazz, gospel and heartfelt soul to create a kind of blues that takes one on an emotional roller coaster ride.
September 22 – Milton Hopkins Band As the Houston Press explains it, “Milton Hopkins has played with Little Richard and Sam Cooke, among many others, spent a decade shoring up B.B. King’s licks and just happens to share a bloodline with H-Town blues Buddha Lightnin’ Hopkins (they’re cousins).”
September 29 – Trudy Lynn Born and raised in Houston's music-rich Fifth Ward, Trudy Lynn began singing in an era when the neighborhood's blues and early R & B culture was first turning on to a new sound known simply as soul. As a younger female working with established hometown favorites such as guitarists Albert Collins and Clarence Green, Trudy learned how to fuse classic blues elements with the music of the moment.
October 6 – "Sonny Boy" Terry Jerome As the years go on and his resume deepens, Houston, Texas bluesman Sonny Boy Terry is now being recognized as one of Texas' - if not one of America's top harmonica players and devoted blues recording artists. But Terry wasn't always Sonny Boy and it didn't happen the way many would imagine. Born Terry Jerome in the unlikely place of Van Wert in northwest Ohio on the state line near Fort Wayne, Indiana, he picked up a harmonica as a teenager in the 1970s , mostly, he says, "because I wanted to jam with my friends, who played guitars".
October 13 – Rich Del Grosso & Jonn Del Toro Richardson Rich DelGrosso and Jonn Del Toro Richardson bring together an original mix of grooves and styles rooted in Texas blues and culture. DelGrosso’s electrified mandolin, coupled with his gravely baritone voice, give him a unique sound that conjures up other great urban mandolin bluesmen from the past. Del Toro Richardson is a fiery guitarist whose roots run deep in the Texas blues and Tex- Mex communities. Both have been recognized in the national blues scene, DelGrosso for his mandolin playing (five-time Blues Music Award nominee) and Del Toro Richardson for his work with Diunna Greenleaf’s Blue Mercy (Albert King Best New Guitatrist Award) and a Grammy recipient for his backing of Pinetop Perkins in Perkins’ Last of the Great Mississippi Bluesmen. Their debut recording project, Time Slips On By, will be released this fall.
October 20 – Curley Cormier Cormier owns Fifth Ward blues club the Silver Slipper and has been a musical staple in Houston for decades—his father opened the venue as Alfred's in 1962.
October 27 – Donna "Lady D" McIntyre Born Donna Merle McIntyre on July 14, 1946, in Houston, Texas, she grew up singing. Emulating her mother, a minister who used her vocal talents in church, the young Donna performed in various gospel groups. She began her professional singing career as Tha Lady D with her own group "Pride, Incorporated." Today, her music has a blues and soul flavor, but never far away from gospel. Tha Lady D croons like Millie, bellows like Big Maybelle and howls like KoKo; yet she has developed her own style and sings from her heart, pulling the crowd in as she goes. She is known for her outrageous stage costumes, and is a very flamboyant entertainer. She wins her audiences over by belting out a barrage of blues classics, as well as her own hits that consistently pack the dance floors of Texas. She is rich in her abundance of love for her audiences and singing the blues.
November 3 – Texas Johnny Brown (pictured above) Texas Johnny Brown is one of the legendary figures of the American blues scene. Johnny began his musical career in Houston in the mid- 1940s and toured with Bobby "Blue" Bland and Junior Parker in the 1950s and 1960s. Since returning to music full-time in 1991, Johnny has won numerous awards and played across America and internationally.
