The Menil Collection presents a Gallery Talk:  A conversation with artist Vija Celmins, exhibition curator Franklin Sirmans, and Associate Curator Michelle White, Friday, November 19, 2010, 7:00 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibition Vija Celmins: Television and Disaster, 1964-1968, on view November 19, 2010 through February 20, 2011.

Born in 1938 in Riga, Latvia, painter Vija Celmins (pictured) came to the U.S. at age ten. She received and MFA degree at UCLA, and has lived primarily in New York since 1981. The work in this show - oil on canvas, the palette focused on gradations between black and gray - is informed by the first televised war.

The precisely rendered images of death and disaster reflect the moment, 1964-1966, when the printed image gave way to the ubiquitous TV screen.
