Although numerous elements of spirituals can be traced to African sources, African-American spirituals are a musical form that is indigenous and specific to the religious experience in the United States of Africans and their descendants. They are a result of the interaction of music and religion from Africa with music and religion of European origin.

This Song Salon will trace the lineage from the very specific African-American experience of the traditional spiritual to the more universal world of modern gospel.

The Rothko Chapel is funded in party by a grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
