Houston Ebony Opera presents their Annual Opera Gems Concert at 4p.m., Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the Hobby Center-Zilkha Hall. Jason Oby is program director; Clyde Owen Jackson is choral director. This year's concert is entitled “Church Roots and Operatic Wings”: The Musical Journey of the African American Classical Singer.
The concert will trace the journey of African American opera singers from their nurturing roots in church music to the stages of the world’s great opera houses and concert halls. You will hear outstanding solo and choral performers singing the best examples of repertoire from these genres: opera, Spirituals and 1940’s –style gospel quartet singing Narration and imagery will highlight the connections.
Performers: Concert singers will be the Houston Ebony Opera Chorus and several soloists. Houston debut performances will be made by two New-York based soloists: contralto Nicole Mitchell and soprano Diana Solomon-Glover. Among the soloists already familiar to Houston audiences will be soprano Imani Anderson, tenor Wayne Ashley, baritone Duwayne Davis, bass-baritone Dorceal Duckens, and tenor Jason Oby.
