CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Young Performers Studio (Saturdays)
October 2, 2010-January 8, 2011
The Alley Theatre presents YPS (Young Performers Studio). YPS teaches continuing and pregressive classes in acting, writing, directing, vocal techniques, movement and improvisation.
Students can look forward to exciting activities during any of our Young Performer Studios. Our teaching artists strive to make each lesson engaging and fun. Some activities will include: storytelling, improvisation, voice, movement, and lessons on basic acting. Guest artists from the Alley staff will frequently demonstrate various acting, design, and production techniques to all of the classes.
The Alley Theatre’s Education & Community Engagement Department strives to serve future artists, educators and learners of all ages. Our goal is to encourage participation in theatre at all levels, spark intellectual curiosity, enhance creative expression and foster personal growth. By offering weekend workshops, after school classes and summer camps that focus on playmaking, ensemble building and the design process, YPS promotes individual creativity and connects youth and families to the work of the Alley Theatre in a profound and personal way.
Young Performers Saturday Studios are process classes that teach students how to do theatre. Basic skills such as acting, writing, directing, voice, movement, and improvisation will be taught on a continuing basis with students constantly being challenged to expand their skill set. Occasional sharing sessions will be scheduled as students achieve certain benchmarks, but the focus will be less on performance and more on becoming better artists of the theatre. Since classes will be ongoing, it will allow us to bring in specialty teachers to teach units on specific teaching methods. Such units will include: Viola Spolin’s Theatre Games, Rasa Boxes, Anne Bogart’s Viewpoints and Laban Movement techniques. Schedules will be released monthly and students will be able to choose which classes interest them most.
There is an annual family membership fee of $30 to become a member of the Young Performers Saturday Studio. A Flexcard must be purchased in order to attend a Saturday Studio session at the Alley Theatre.
We offer 24 studio classes during the school year. There are many options for each student within the following age groups and skill levels.
- Basic (ages 8-10)
- Scene Lab (ages 8-10)
- Fundamentals (ages 11-15)
- Troupe (ages 11-15)
- Vanguard (ages 10-15)
The Flexcard allows families the grace to attend classes when it is convenient. Each time a class is taken, the Flex card will be stamped. All students will be evaluated at the start the 2010/11 season for placement purposes. Advancement to a different level will be determined after three sessions by teaching artists as key skills and benchmarks are demonstrated. This is a great program for students involved in other theatre and performing arts programs.
The YPS Flexcards cost $120 for 8 classes or $70 for 4 classes. All punch cards expire on May 14, 2011 or 6 months after being purchased.
All classes are Saturday from 10:00am-11:30am. The 2010-2011 dates are:
- October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30
