Cypress Creek FACE presents Yeol Eum Son, pianist, 4 p.m., Sunday, November 7, 2010. A Promenade Classics Special Event.
At the age of twenty-three, Yeol Eum Son’s highly versatile and accomplished performances earned her a silver medal at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Already acknowledged as an artist to watch in Asia, Miss Son adds European and North American recognition. “Son should have no trouble building a career. She’s got the fingers and the personality – and, at least here, the haut-est couture.” – Scott Cantrell, Dallas Morning News
Pianist Yeol Eum Son (pronounced Your-arm Son) was awarded both the Silver Medal and the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music in the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition held in Fort Worth, Texas in June 2009.
A native of South Korea’s Kangwon Province, the pianist drew international attention when she appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Lorin Maazel, performing Beethoven’s Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 19 on the Philharmonic’s historic tour to Seoul in 2008. She had previously performed Liszt’s Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major with the Philharmonic under Maestro Maazel in Daejeon and Tokyo in 2004.
A favorite among international orchestras, Ms. Son has also appeared with the Israel, Czech, and Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestras, the NHK Symphony and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestras in Japan, and Baden-Baden Symphony Orchestra in Germany. She has performed with every major orchestra in her home country of South Korea, as well as orchestras in the United States.
Fluent in both Korean and English, Yeol Eum Son divides her home between Hannover, Germany and Wonju, Korea.
