Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts - UH presents the Red Rock Bash, Thursday, September 30, 4pm-7pm.

The Red Block Bash, a UH Arts Open House presented by the Blaffer Student Association and the Mitchell Center, features live music from the Moores School of Music, readings from the Creative Writing Program, demonstrations by the School of Art and performances by the School of Theatre & Dance.

All events offer a sneak peek at the UH arts fall season.

You can't spell "party" without the "art." That's because on Thursday, Sept. 30, 4 - 7 p.m., the University of Houston's Blaffer Student Association and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts will host the Red Block Bash, a student-run social gathering that connects the university community to the arts on campus. The Bash offers live performances, art activities and complimentary food and drink. Admission is free for everyone, and while the event is mainly targeted toward UH students, the public is invited and encouraged to come. The Bash will take place in the Fine Arts Building courtyard and in the UH Arts Quad between the Fine Arts Building and the Moores School of Music on the University of Houston's central campus.

"The fall Red Block Bash is the Blaffer Student Association's penultimate event. With the help of the Mitchell Center, we have had all summer to plan for a terrific day, and we're hoping for a record turnout," stated BSA vice president Scarlett Taylor. "Come for the pizza and ice cream, stay for the art."

Among the events taking place during the party, attendees can enjoy performances by student band Cirrus Minor, the UH Dance Ensemble, the Moores School Jazz Trio and acoustic guitar duo Dylan Brooks and Chris Powell. Members of Glass Mountain, the undergraduate literary journal at UH, will present poetry readings in Blaffer Art Museum. Student-made videos and a film about Blaffer's award-winning Young Artist Apprenticeship Program will be screened in Dudley Recital Hall. The Bash will culminate in a raffle drawing with prizes awarded.

Throughout the festivities, guests can also participate in two art-making activities: sketching with live models and a collaborative mural. "No, the models will not be nude, and the mural creation will not involve defacing the Fine Arts Building with spray paint, but I assure you that all the activities during the Bash will be fun and inspire creativity. And some of them may even be a little off-kilter," stated BSA president Ryan Hernandez. "This is a college campus, after all," she added.
