The Center for Jewish Living and Learning at the Jewish Community Center of Houston presents a Tal Zilber Piano Concert, Sunday, September 26, at 7:00 p.m. Join us for a concert by Tal Zilber, classical, jazz and pop pianist, composer, improviser and graduate of Shepherd School of Music, Rice University.
Tal Zilber (b. 1982) a native of Israel, enjoys an intensive career of unusual diversity as a concert pianist of classical repertoire, jazz and pop pianist, composer and improviser. Along with his career as a classical recitalist, his piano and chamber music transcriptions were performed by the Carmel String Quartet, his orchestra arrangements were performed by the Symphony Orchestra of "Be’er Sheva", he performed his electro acoustic compositions on the Louisiana-Texas electro acoustic music festival (LaTex) in Texas and his original incidental music for the play Chulsha by Ran Apelberg, directed by David Shushan, was performed at the Fringe Festival in Haifa, Israel.
In the classical music scene Mr. Zilber has appeared as a soloist with the Ramat Hasharon Orchestra in Tel Aviv. He has performed both in chamber music concerts and solo performances in Israel and abroad. His recordings were played on the Galei Zahal radio station in Israel. He also won prizes and awards. Among them are the Andre Watts Scholarship, America-Israel culture foundation scholarship, Prize in honor of Mrs. Rosi Varon at the "Voice of Music – Young Artist Competition 2006" (Israel), the Lillian H. Duncan Prize and the Marian Fox Martel Scholarship.
Tal Zilber was chosen to serve as an Outstanding Musician in the Israeli Defense Forces. During the three years of his military service, he was chosen by the Zionist Federation to participate in a concert tour in Australia.
Tal Zilber holds a Master’s degree from the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University where he studied with Brian Connelly. He is an alumnus of the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, from which he obtained a Performer Diploma under the instruction of Edmund Battersby. He received his Bachelor’s degree in music from the Rubin Israeli Music Academy (Tel Aviv University, Israel), graduating magna cum laude, studied with Michael Boguslavsky and Alexander Volkov. He also participated in various master classes, given by well-known and distinguished pianists and teachers, such as Pnina Salzman, Ronan O'Hara, Evelyne Brancart, Tamás Ungár and the Eroica Trio.
Currently, he is studying towards a Doctorate Degree in Contemporary Improvisation at the New England Conservatory with Ran Blake.
The Jewish Community Center has founded the Center for Jewish Learning and Living, a collaborative process that brings together the arts and culture programming of the Center, such as the Book and Arts Fair, the Jewish Film Festival, and the Jewish Music Festival, and the education initiatives of the Center, such as the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, and the Bunny and Leo Horvitz Scholar-in-Residence Program. In addition, this collaboration brings additional programs and staff to the Jewish initiatives of the JCC, with high hopes that more members of our community may be touched by meaningful Jewish experiences.
