Every third Wednesday of the month at the Artist SPEAKeasy, Spacetaker hosts artists from varying disciplines (visual, performing, literary, etc.) to present, in an informal atmosphere, creative dialogs/talks/presentations about their work followed by a question and answer session where the audience can glean further insight into the artist, the artist's aesthetic and creative process.

The evening is designed not only to bring together artists and those who appreciate the arts, but also to introduce local artists to each other to encourage conversation and cross-disciplinary collaboration between artists and their chosen media.

Drinks and nosh are served at 6:30; formal talks are underway at 7:00. Guests are invited to come and go as necessary.

This month's Spacetaker Artist SPEAKeasy features Jeffrey Mills of the Documentary Alliance and Joel Sandel and David Wald of Main Street Theater.

    About Documentary Alliance:

We are the Documentary Alliance, a Houston-based 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating the cultural amnesia that is robbing Americans of the valuable lessons of the past. We do this by using film, video and multimedia to fashion thoughtful and thought provoking stories about history, culture, and science. By preserving and presenting these ideas, we hope to inform, inspire, and empower Americans to fashion a better tomorrow.

    About Main Street Theater:

Main Street Theater's mission is to create theater that challenges its audience to think and its artists to grow. We accomplish this by presenting an articulate and compelling product in an intimate setting, creating significant employment for Houston-based artists, and memorable theatrical experiences for audiences of all ages.

Joel and David are performing in "The Doctor’s Dilemma"
A doctor who has developed a cure for tuberculosis can take only one more patient. He must decide between a kindly, poor, medical colleague and a charming young artist who is a genius but a scoundrel with a young and vivacious wife (with whom the doctor is somewhat in love). Throughout history and certainly in the present day, there are medical treatments so scarce or costly that some people can have them while others cannot. Who is to decide, and on what grounds is the decision to be made? 100 years ago, Shaw saw the potential for “death panels” and examined the dilemma with his customary wit and charm. Inspired by a London surgeon who made a fortune convincing people to let him remove their uvula, this play premiered in 1906 at the Royal Court Theatre in London with Harley Granville-Barker as the artist.
