ArtWorks retail gallery at the Galveston Arts Center is pleased to host a trunk show featuring handmade jewelry, accessories, and textiles created by area artists on Saturday, October 16, from 3 to 7 pm. INnovative Art to Wear will include handcrafted pieces by Heidi Gerstacker, Nadia & Myrna Khan, Barbara Kile, Edward McCartney, Amber Tiemann, and Olga Tarasova, among others. All work will be available for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Galveston Arts Center’s exhibition and education programs. The event is free and open to the public.

GAC’s ArtWorks gallery provides a retail showcase for fine craft artists and artisans from around Texas working in all media. This special one-day only event features unique handcrafted pieces by metalsmith and textile artists from Houston and the Galveston area.

Featured fiber artists include Barbara Kile, the mother/daughter team of Nadia Khan and Myrna Kahn, and Olga Tarasova. Barbara Kile’s distinctive designs include work in media ranging from fabric, fibers and felt to metal, wire and wood. Her hats are individually made using traditional millinery techniques. She finds inspiration in the world around her, drawing upon the style, color and textures of places she has lived in or traveled to. Also drawing inspiration from nature, especially the world of plants and images of sea and sky is the collaborative team of Nadia and Myrna Khan. Using silk as a medium, they create vibrant wearable art, exploring color, texture and pattern in their collaborative works.

Metalsmith Edward McCartney’s educational background in interior design and space planning has been incorporated into his craft as an art jeweler, as much of his work involves pushing the boundaries of body adornment and traditional ornament. He writes, “I find expression in both small and large sculptural forms, often with the preciousness, detail, or vocabulary of the jeweler’s eye.” Architecture and industrial design also inspire jeweler Amber Tiemann. Using metal, Teimann incorporates bold color into her designs via colored stones and different forms of enameling.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Galveston Arts Center and all of its public programming - including free admission at all times to exhibitions of contemporary art, the presentation of art education outreach programs for underserved populations in our community, and the production of ArtWalk, one of Galveston’s favorite destination events.
