The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Friday-Saturday Lecture: Gone to Pot! Masterpieces of Greek Vase Painting, at the Caroline Wiess Law Building. Presented by Dr. Jasper Gaunt, (pictured) Curator of Greek and Roman Art, Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University.

In ancient Greece, partnerships between potters and the painters who worked for them elevated the level of decorated ceramics from one of utilitarian craft to fine art. The quality of the potting in the masterpieces they created suggests the smoothness of porcelain. The imagery, drawn from everyday life, mythology, and religious practice, evokes the timelessness of an old master drawing.

Dr. Jasper Gaunt explores the worlds in which these artists and their patrons moved, how the vases were made and why they circulated so very widely using examples from the MFAH and other Houston collections that exemplify this long and overwhelmingly rich tradition.

Lectures are free with museum admission and open to the public. A reception to meet the speaker follows each program.
