The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents a MFAH Friday-Saturday Lecture: Why Mummify? Egyptian Religion, Medical Theory, and the Funerary Arts, at the Caroline Wiess Law Building. Presented by Dr. Robert Ritner, (pictured) Professor of Egyptology at The Oriental Institute, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Program on the Ancient Mediterranean World in the Department of Classics, and in the College, The University of Chicago.

In this richly illustrated lecture, Dr. Robert Ritner examines the Egyptian mythology of Osiris and Anubis, detailing the theological origin of death and mummification, in conjunction with the Egyptian concept of wekhedu, the world´s first comprehensive theory of aging, natural disease, death and decay.

Taken together, the mythological and medical interpretations led to the development of the elaborate practice of bodily mummification of humans and animals, and of the associated coffins, masks, papyri, figurines and offerings that accompanied the dead to restore—and improve—life in an underw orld paradise.

Lectures are free with museum admission and open to the public. A reception to meet the speaker follows each program.
