Talento Bilingüe de Houston presents the exhibition Día de los muertos: Desfile de Catrinas, an exhibit of sculptures from Mexico, on view November 2 – 12, 2010. Opening reception: November 2nd 7pm – 9pm.

Inspired by Mexico's Centennial, Michoacán artist and longtime A.I.D.S. activist, Lourdes Lopez Moreno presents an original group of skeletons - a.k.a.“Calaveras”.  Moreno’s hand built clay sculptures of Catrinas and Catrines, delight and revel in their Mexican identity.

These figurines bring a modern twist to the traditional “Artesania” from Mexico which pre-date Hispanic times. She is also a professional photographer, sexologist, anti-AIDS activist, who for years held in her town of Uruapan the AVE Group (Voluntary Educational Assistance) and is a fervent believer in respect for the diversity of ideas, whether in the case of aesthetic principles or sexual preferences.

Lourdes has been exhibited throughout Mexico, the United States and internationally. For this exhibit at TBH, her work focuses on a broad cross-section of characters including officials, personalities and artists from the turn of the century Mexico depicting the Independence and the Revolution.

For the reception, guests are invited to dress as high society “undead” socialites (1890 Mexico height of euro-fashion), enjoy viewing these sculptures sipping coffee or hot chocolate provided by our sponsor, Nescafé Clásico and artesan “Pan de muerto” thanks to La Unica Bakery who will be specially creating a an edible bread sculpture.

A sensual performance by Miss Y.E.T., a contemporary burlesque belly-dancer dressed as a “Catrina.” She has created a special movement piece in an original costume just for the evening. Community altars will also be on view.
