Hooks-Epstein Galleries will present Mark Greenwalt:  Collections and Sequels, an exhibition of drawings and paintings. The exhibition opens Saturday, October 23, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. A reception for the artist will follow from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In Collections and Sequels, Mark Greenwalt’s images are related in concept to “memes”, in which ideas reproduce and culturally evolve in parallel to biological “genes”. Thus, forms and figures budding from the fertile conceptual fields of an academic pictorial code, become memetic subjects forever fixed in the physical medium of a painted object. Greenwalt states, “Drifting through cycles of remembering and dismembering, the mind seeds form, deform and reform through analytical mapping and synthetic modeling – balancing rational and irrational extremes.”

Greenwalt’s drawings and paintings are inspired by biological metaphors of sex and adaptation; the symbolizing of ideas and pattern variations that thrive in an era of collective knowledge and promiscuous information. He was also inspired by the ideas that are in libraries and museums. Greenwalt will view historic drawings and paintings, which then lure him to explore the lives of dead artists, extinct cultures and resurrected modalities.

Mark Greenwalt received his Master of Arts from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX and his Master of Fine Arts from The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He currently teaches at The College of the Mainland in Texas City, TX.

Collections and Sequels will continue through November 27, 2010.
