The 38th Annual Jewish Book & Arts Fair    tributes Local Authors. The 38th Annual Jewish Book & Arts Fair will feature Hometown Heroes, on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. The program will showcase the works of eleven local authors. Each author has published a book in the past year and will be present at the event to sign books and chat with patrons.

“Being an independent person, I decided to approach my project as a business venture,” featured author Gerald Blumenthal explained. “The sense of achievement—doing most of the work myself—was incredible.”

Blumenthal’s book, The Brass Compass, is based on the true story of a Holocaust survivor who himself works hard to become a scientist of international repute.

Other authors include Alan Berkowitz who writes about the triumph of Holocaust survivors in pursuing their dreams in The Jazz Girls and the Flyboy: A Jewish Saga of World War II and Israel. D.E. Cummings takes us back into the wartime ghetto in Poland in her book Knights of Warsaw. And Sheldon Rubenfeld provides a scholarly account in Medicine after the Holocaust: From the Master Race to the Human Genome and Beyond.

Dr. Paul Friedman, Dr. Ron DeVere and Renee Wallace all discovered inadequacies in the medical field and sought to fix them, sharing their knowledge in their respective books Beautiful Skin Revealed, Navigating Smell and Taste Disorders and Creative Caring: The Vita-Living Story. Memoirists Lester Smith and Sara B. Wolf discuss their passions that have literally propelled them through life—dancing for him and running for her—in their books You Gotta Dance Like No One’s Watching and Beating the Bridge.
Another memoir, The Golden Age and Its Implosion, recounts the riveting life of Emil Steinberger as he served as a Navy doctor. He will be represented by his widow, Anna Steinberger. A lifelong Houstonian and social worker, Cele Keeper, epitomizes our Hometown Heroes by devoting her life to social justice and philanthropy, telling all in her book It's Never Too Late to Grow Up.

The JCC is honored to serve as a platform for informing the community of these authors’ immense achievements. The book signing will take place in the JCC Bookstore, 5601 S. Braeswood, as a part of the Houston Jewish Book & Arts Fair. No reservations are needed.
