Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) continues its 6th season of bringing family-friendly entertainment to Houston with its Teen Actors Guild production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, the musical that won six Tony awards during its Broadway production in 2002, opening at 8 PM on Friday, November 12 and running through Sunday, November 21, 2010.

Directed by Ilich Guardiola with musical direction by Pamela M. Moore and choreography by Ellen Dyer, the musical comedy will be presented at 8 PM Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 PM on Sundays on the HFAC Garza Mainstage in the Houston Family Arts Center at 10760 Grant Road, Houston, TX 77070.

Thoroughly Modern Millie started life as an Oscar winning film and then was translated to this fun, vivacious, frothy musical. The plot revolves around the exploits of Millie Dillmount, a young girl from a small town in Kansas (played by Melissa Beaird and Jessie Brownie), who arrives in New York in 1922, ready for fame and fortune.

Along the way, she very literally bumps into Jimmie, a charming and handsome, but apparently poor, young man (played by Austin Jacobs and Ryan Jacobs) and takes a room at a strange hotel for young ladies, where indigents with no family or friends stand a good chance of being shipped off to white slave traffickers in Hong Kong by Mrs. Meers (played by Dorcas Leung and Bethany Trevino) and her two Mandarin Chinese helpers (played by Heaton Conner and Olivia Clayton).

Millie is determined to find a job where she can marry her boss – whomever he might be - but that doesn’t work out, because Mr. Trevor Graydon III, her boss, (played by Matt Buzonas) has eyes only for beautiful Miss Dorothy Brown (played by Tiffany Hopper and Kristen Malisewski). And then an evening at a speakeasy with madcap heiress Muzzy van Hossmere (Libby Jasper and Lindsay Sloan) ends with a night in jail.

Of course, in the end, there is love and romance, Mrs. Meers is thwarted, and everything ends up happily ever after, in the best traditions of a fun happy-go-lucky musical. It’s crazy fun, it’s frisky flappers, it’s Thoroughly Modern Millie!
