The Houston Museum of Natural Science presents Genealogy 101,  a Hands-On Class for Adults! Monday, November 15, 6 p.m. (Library Session on Wednesday, November 17).

Genealogy is growing in popularity because of the interest in the pursuit of a personal past. This introductory class, led by genealogy research staff of the Clayton Library—one of the top five genealogy libraries in the United States—will focus on starting genealogical research by examining basic tools and research strategies. Learn about the different genealogical materials available to researchers and how they lead to other sources.

On the second day, tour the Clayton Library, just six blocks from the HMNS, and receive an overview of their international genealogical research collections.

The Clayton Library houses many passenger lists for many ports including Passenger Lists of Vessels arriving at Galveston—featured in the Forgotten Gateway exhibition. The Clayton Library collections include Galveston Passenger Lists 1846 – 1871 (Copies of lists of passengers arriving at miscellaneous ports…Atlantic…Gulf…Great Lakes…1820 – 1873); Galveston Quarterly Abstracts of Passenger Lists (1846 – 1871); Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Galveston, Texas (1896 – 1951); Galveston Passenger Lists (1895- 1921); Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels arriving at Galveston (1896 – 1906); Galveston Index to Passengers (1906 – 1951).

Family history is the story of your life and the lives of your ancestors. Start researching your story now! Fall is a great time to kick-off a genealogy project—so you are ready to involve your family when gathered over the holidays. This class is offered in partnership with the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research / Houston Public Library.
