    Rice University Shepherd School of Music presents the Chamber Music Festival: Spotlight on Music of the '20's. Saturday, November 13, 10am to 10pm.  Duncan Recital Hall - Alice Pratt Brown Hall

    The decade of the '20s in each century has been a time of turbulent change. There's a reason why they call them the Roaring '20s! This semester's chamber music festival will spotlight the music of the 1820s and 1920s and will feature works that showcase the tremendous revolutionary spirit of these times.

    In the 1820s the classical era was at close and the doors were opening to the Romantic period. The late Beethoven string quartets in A minor and E-Flat Major were examples of works leading the way and setting the stage for the century to follow. Also the last works of Schubert will be featured including the Cello Quintet, the string quartets in G Major and Death and the Maiden plus the Piano Fantasy for four hands. The early works of Mendelssohn will also be heard including two string quartets, a viola quintet and the sextet with piano and strings.

    In the 20th century the time of upheaval was even more dramatic as we hear works featuring late Romantic style bumping against groundbreaking music of the future. Composers we will hear that showcase this dichotomy are Bloch, Bartók, Bax, Dohnányi, Prokofiev, Hindemith, Rachmaninoff, Roussel, Turina, and Walton. Come enjoy the excitement of this marvelous music and the talented students that will bring these compositions to life on the Duncan stage.

    The Chamber Music Festival concerts will be held throughout the day and into the evening on November 13th in Duncan Recital Hall.

    From morning to evening for an entire day, this festival will include:

    Beethoven - String Quartets in A Minor, Op. 132, and E-flat Major, Op. 127;

    Schubert - String Quintet in C Major, D. 956, String Quartets in G Major, D. 887, in D Minor, D. 810 “Death and the Maiden,” and Fantasia in F Minor for Piano Four-Hands, D. 940;

    Mendelssohn - two string quartets, String Quintet No. 1 in A Major, Op. 18, and Sextet in D Major for Piano and Strings, Op. 110;

    Bloch - Piano Quintet No. 1 and Three Nocturnes for Piano Trio;

    Bartók - Contrasts and String Quartet No. 3;
