Jackson Pollock (1912—1956) is widely regarded as the iconic Abstract Expressionist painter of the 20th century. But he is also one of the most misunderstood of the New York School generation of American artists. Characterized as a cowboy "twirling lariats of color" and "Jack the Dripper," Pollock created a vigorous body of work that has often been seen as a mirror for his rebellious reputation.

In this richly illustrated lecture, Dr. Frank Spicer will clarify many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding Pollock´s remarkable career, one cut short by his untimely death in 1956, and will deepen our understanding and appreciation of the many works by Pollock in the MFAH collection by showing us how to look at the intricate webs of paint Pollock created through his innovative, signature drip technique.
