Divas World Productions presents Jazz Salon Series: New Orleans, Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 7:30pm in Hobby Center - Zilkha Hall.

From Buddy Bolden to Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet to Jelly Roll Morton, there's a reason New Orleans is distinctly known as the Birthplace of Jazz! We'll explore the rump-shaking street beat, traditional swing, and modern day funk that makes the Crescent City such a spectacular place to experience.

Jazz Salon: New Orleans includes an incredible line-up of jazz musicians with wide-ranging mix of instruments and styles – from the clarinet to the soprano sax, and from the trumpet to the trombone. The evening will focus on some of the renowned musical battles between the legendary Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet.

Guest performers throughout the evening include:

    • Grammy Award winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton (pictured, photo by Michael Wilson)
    • Clarinetist Dr. Michael White and his Liberty Jazz Band
    • Saxophonist Mark Gross
    • And a special guest appearance by jazz trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis

We are pleased to announce the addition of our Divas Jazz Series this season, where you will experience the excitement of live jazz performances combined with the thought-provoking stimulation of artist-audience discussions. Created by Delfeayo Marsalis, celebrated jazz trombonist and Divas World Director of Jazz, this popular new series will make its public debut in Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

All performances will feature the incredible sounds of Delfeayo Marsalis along with other musical guests throughout the season.

Jazz is a class of music that crosses all the traditional barriers, with a mass appeal that has spanned the decades. It is about both the past and the present, and is as much of a state of mind as it is a genre. This season we will pay tribute to a wide range of jazz styles, including: Blues, Spirituals, Popular Standards, Swing, Bebop, and Modern Jazz. We invite you to join us this season as we explore the distinctive and upbeat Jazz sounds of New Orleans, Chicago and New York.

Each performance in the Divas World 4-concert Jazz Salon series will feature some of the most notable jazz musicians from around the country and, in the tradition of the Divas Salon series, will incorporate discussion and commentary throughout the performance to provide audiences with a concert experience that stimulates all the senses.

Ticket prices for individual Jazz Salon performances range from $25 - $35 per ticket; Jazz Brunch tickets are $65 each; tickets for the entire 4-concert Jazz Salon series are $100 - $120. Tickets can be purchased directly through The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts or by calling The Hobby Center box office at 713.315.2525.
