    Family Day at MFAH: Build It!

    February 6 is a Family Day at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

    As part of Family Day at MFAH, the museum’s education department plans an array of art activities, performances, films, and refreshments from 1 pm to 4 pm designed to give families an interactive experience, with an emphasis on current exhibitions.

    Admission to the museum is $7 for adults...

    Admission to the museum is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children and seniors. All Family Day activities are free with the price of general admission..

    Come discover the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston inside and out!   Enjoy family flicks, sketching, storytime tours, and refreshments.  The family flicks are shown in Brown Auditorium Theater on the lower level of the Law Building.   Art activities are held in both the Law and Beck buildings, and refreshments are provided.

    Explore and make art, see a performance, hear a story, watch a family film, and much more!

    Explore architecture and creativity at the Build It! MFAH Family Day. Create a 3-D model of a museum gallery and fill it with art, look high and low to sketch the museum’s two distinct buildings or learn about their histories on a family gallery experience, and listen to a fun storybook in the galleries.

    Catch the cool jazz sounds of Kim Prevost and Bill Solley as they “build” songs and melodies during a family-friendly performance.

    For the little ones, animated Storybook Films at 1:30 will bring picture books Roberto the Insect Architect and This Is the House that Jack Built to life on screen.

    Don’t miss the Reel Kids film screening of the Oscar®-winning film WALL-E at 2:30 p.m.

    Enjoy the cool sounds of jazz vocalist Kim Solley and guitar player Bill Solley as they “build” songs and melodies during this gallery performance.

    Sketching in the Galleries
    Lobby
    1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
    Sketch the architectural sights of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Pick up pencils, a clipboard, and a stool from the MFAH Teaching Artist and sketch wherever you wish. Let the buildings inspire you!

    Meets in Beck Lobby
    1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
    Explore the breathtaking architecture of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on this family gallery experience, led by an MFAH Educator.

    Storytime: A House is a House for Me
    Gallery 218
    1:30 and 3:00 p.m.
    Enjoy a beautiful picture book in the gallery. A House is House for Me, winner of a National Book Award, tells a story about different kinds of houses in unexpected ways. Then, have fun exploring the gallery you are sitting in that was made to “house” works of art.

    Design Your Own Museum Gallery
    SW Bell Studio and Farish Classroom
    1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
    Build a model of your own art museum gallery, and fill it with mini sculptures and paintings! MFAH Teaching Artists are on hand to get you started with materials in both SW Bell Studio and Farish Classroom.

    Law Building Activities
    The Construction Site at the Kinder Foundation Education Center
    Lower Level
    1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
    Visitors from ages 1-100 will have fun building at the Construction Site using all types of classic building materials. Inside the Kinder Foundation Education Center (KFEC), your family will discover a variety of books and suggestions for works of art to visit, and tips to help families have fun at the museum. With art, poetry, and storybooks, as well as a selection of MFAH publications, there is something for everyone to explore, interact and learn!

    Families with young ones will enjoy these two animated films based on celebrated children’s storybooks. First, Roberto the Insect Architect tells of a termite who dreams of becoming an architect. Then enjoy the classic nursery rhyme This Is the House That Jack Built, a story that shows how one house is connected to many parts of life! (18 minutes total)

    In the distant future, a small waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind. Critically acclaimed and award-winning, WALL-E made numerous “Best of 2008” film lists and won the Oscar® for Best Animated Film that year. (98 minutes)

    Parking:

    Museum Parking Garage

    Located directly east of the Beck and Law buildings, the MFAH Visitors Center features a four-story covered parking garage.

    The easy-to-find parking entrance is on Binz, marked by a large, yellow arrow.

    You're always protected from the elements when you park your car in the Museum Garage. From there, you can go to the Visitors Center lobby and find a ticketing desk and up-to-the minute museum information.

    As an added convenience, you can enter the Beck and Law buildings from the Visitors Center through security-monitored, climate-controlled tunnels connecting all three buildings.
