The Houston Symphony presents Exploring Mahler 10, Friday-Saturday, May 13-14 at 8pm and Sunday, May 15 at 2:30pm in Jones Hall.

Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler’s death, the Houston Symphony’s program on May 13, 14 and 15 will focus on his final, unfinished composition, Symphony No. 10. Beginning with a pre-performance discussion, Music Director Hans Graf and American Public Media’s Brian Newhouse (pictured,  photo by Ann Marsden) will make some observations about the sketches Mahler left behind and what English musicologist Deryck Cooke did to make these sketches playable.

Mahler worked on this symphony until his unfortunate death in 1911 from an infection, leaving it mostly incomplete. Several musicologists worked to create a performable version of the complete symphony, but it was Deryck Cooke’s version that is most often performed.

    About Brian Newhouse
Brian Newhouse is the managing director of Minnesota Public Radio/American Public Media’s classical programming, including SymphonyCast, Performance Today, Pipedreams and other programs that reach four million national listeners weekly. Newhouse has been a soloist with the Dale Warland Singers and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and was an artist-in-residence at the Oregon Bach Festival. He won a Peabody Award for writing the radio documentary, The Mississippi: River of Song and is the author of the memoir, A Crossing. He hosts the Friday night live regional broadcasts of the Minnesota Orchestra on Classical Minnesota Public Radio. He and his family live in St. Paul.
